Salmonella levels in the UK in 2002

In 2002 the total number of Salmonella
incidents reported in cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry decreased
by 13.4% compared with 2000.
Salmonella
incidence in 2002 compared to 2001 increased by 23.8%. The 2001
Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak affected the surveillance for
Salmonella due to disruption of normal faming practice
and the submission of fewer clinical specimens for examination.
Serotypes Isolated

- S. Dublin
– mostly isolated from cattle
- S. Typhimurium
- S. Livingstone
- S. Enterica
subspecies diarizonae
- S. Senftenberg
Poultry
Chickens:
- Number of reported incidents = 869
- Similar to 2001
- Decreased from 2000 = 1 186
- Only 11 incidents of S Enteritidis reported.
- S Livingstone most commonly isolated serotype followed
by S Senftenberg
Other poultry:
- Decrease in incidents of Salmonella reported from
turkeys. S Typhimurium most commonly isolated.
- Increase in reports of Salmonella from ducks, probably
due to increased voluntary surveillance activities
- Reports from game birds decreased by 36%
