Aviguard®
Aviguard® is a unique freeze dried product composed of normal intestinal bacteria from healthy adult chickens. It acts by the process of competitive exclusion to prevent colonisation by transient pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli and Clostridium perfringens.
Aviguard® contains over two hundred different types of bacteria which colonise the intestinal tract. It is not a probiotic. Probiotics normally contain a small number of bacterial species which are transient. It is well documented that only complete bacterial cultures have proven efficacious in preventing pathogens.
Birds hatched in the wild naturally pick up their mother's gut flora whereas when hatched in a sterile hatchery environment there is no such oppurtunity leaving them susceptible to infections. Aviguard® provides balanced intestinal flora.
Unlike vaccines which are serotype specific Aviguard® protects against all Salmonella serotypes. Aviguard can be used alone or in conjunction with Salmonella vaccines to broaden protection against different serotypes.
Aviguard® should be applied as early as possible in the bird's life. It can be applied by coarse spray for day olds or via drinking water for older birds.
